basal plate
The term basal plate refers to an embryologic structure that develops as a result of the proliferation of ectodermal cells in the mantle layer of the portion the neural tube that is developing into the spinal cord. Each of the basal plates is a relatively large anterior thickening of the mantle layer of neural tube that becomes an anterior gray column of the spinal cord ( Carpenter-1983 ).
