The term special visceral efferents (SVE) refers to nerve fibers that innervate the voluntary striated muscles of the larynx and pharynx and the muscles of facial expression and mastication. These efferents are found in the trigeminal nerve, the facial nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve, the vagus nerve and the accessory nerve ( Carpenter-1983 ).
