The term circle of Willis refers to an anastomosing system of arteries that join to form a circle surrounding the hypophysis and optic chiasm at the base of the brain. It consists of the internal carotid arteries, the anterior communicating arteries, the posterior communicating arteries and the posterior cerebral arteries. It is not part of the brain ( Crosby-1962 ).
