accessory nerve

The term accessory nerve refers to the cranial nerve formed by merger of the cranial part of the accessory nerve, which is an appendage of the medulla, and the spinal part of the accessory nerve. It is not part of the brain. A thorough discussion of semantic and factual conflicts in terminology regarding the accessory nerve and associated nuclei is presented in Anthoney-1994.
