superficial features

The term superficial features represents two categories of superficial feature of the brain. 1) "Surface features" are topological landmarks on the surface of the brain that do not occupy volume; for example, the olivary eminence is the protruding surface of the medulla that represents the outer boundary of the inferior olivary complex. 2) "Appendages" represent the other category of superficial feature. They are volumetric structures that are not part of the brain but that are attached to its surface. The cranial nerves, for example, are appendages.
