external pyramidal layer

The term external pyramidal layer is a cytoarchitectural term denoting the most superficial layer of cerebral cortex in which pyramidal cells predominate. In neocortex it is layer III ( Carpenter-1983 ). In areas of agranular cortex with minimal evidence of an external granular layer (II), the external pyramidal layer is sometimes labeled layer II/III.

Also known as: external pyramidal layer, Lamina pyramidalis externa, Layer III, layer of medium-sized and large pyramidal cells, Lamina III, Lamina pyramidalis, isocortex, deep supragranular pyramidal layer
