area paAc of Pandya (paAc)
The term
area paAc of Pandya refers to one of four cortical areas that border the
granulous cortex core (
area Kam of Pandya and area Kalt of Pandya) in the
superior temporal gyrus of the
macaque defined on the basis of cytomyeloarchitecture. The others are
area paAlt of Pandya,
area paAr of Pandya, and
area proA of Pandya. The most
caudal of the four, it occupies the posterior end of the
temporal operculum. It differs from Kalt in that a "small fringe" of larger pyramidal cells is seen deep in the
external pyramidal layer (III), cell density is not as great in the outer layers and the
internal pyramidal layer (V) is not as light. Functionally the areas are regarded as
auditory cortex (
Pandya-1973 ).
