hippocampal formation (functional)

The term hippocampal formation (functional) refers to a composite structure of the ventral part of the limbic lobe defined primarily on the basis of connectivity and function. In the human ( Insausti-2004 ) and the macaque ( Paxinos-2009a ) it includes the archicortex, the presubiculum, the parasubiculum and the entorhinal area. It is the same in the rat ( Swanson-2004; Paxinos-2009b ) and mouse ( Dong-2004; Franklin-2008 ) except that it includes the postsubiculum of those species as well.
