The definition ventral refers to the relative location of a structure in the body. Ventral structures in the brain lie toward the lower surface; ‘inferior’ is a synonym. Ventral structures in the spinal cord lie toward the abdomen; ‘anterior’ is a synonym in the standing human. See also dorsal, caudal, rostral, lateral and medial.
