| The term alar plate refers to an embryologic structure that develops as a result of the proliferation of ectodermal cells in the mantle layer of that portion of the neural tube which is developing into the spinal cord. The alar plates are the smaller posterior thickenings of the mantle layer that become the posterior gray columns of the spinal cord. |
