The term band of Gennari is a myeloarchitectural term denoting a greatly thickened external band of Baillarger (a dense horizontal plexus of myelinated fibers coursing in the internal granular layer, layer IV, of cerebral cortex). It is visible to the naked eye and gives the striate area 17 its name. In the human, the striate area 17 is located in the banks of the calcarine sulcus and portions of the cuneus and the lingual gyrus of the occipital lobe. |
