| The term basal plate refers to the embryologic structure that develops as a result of the proliferation of ectodermal cells in the mantle layer of the portion the neural tube which is developing into the spinal cord. The basal plates are the larger anterior thickenings of the mantle layer of neural tube which become the anterior gray columns of the spinal cord. |
