neocortex

The term neocortex, or Neocortex, refers to those areas of cerebral cortex characterized by six-layered cortex. It is defined according to cytoarchitectural criteria. It is most prominent in the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe, less so in the cingulate gyrus, the parahippocampal gyrus and the insula. Cytoarchitecturally it is composed of true isocortex and proisocortex.
