paleocortex

The term paleocortex, or Palaeocortex, represents a subdivision of the telencephalon defined by phylogeny, ontogeny and cytoarchitecture. It consists of very thin, primitive cortex with few clearly defined layers. It is distinguished ontogenetically by the fact that it does not develop through a cortical plate. It includes the anterior olfactory nucleus, the cortical parts of the septum including the Regio periseptalis, the Regio diagonalis the anterior perforated substance, the prepyriform area and the periamygdaloid area (Stephan-75).
