planum temporale

The term planum temporale refers to the portion of the superior temporal gyrus of the human that constitutes the temporal bank of the lateral sulcus caudal to the anterior transverse temporal gyrus (H). Cytoarchitecturally it greatly overlaps the auditory association cortex. It is larger in the left temporal lobe than the right, which is thought to relate to the lateralization of speech.
