The term spinothalamic tract, or Tractus spinothalamicus, refers to a fiber pathway that originates from neurons in the spinal cord and projects to various somatosensory nuclei of the thalamus. It is formed from the anterior and lateral spinothalamic tracts of the spinal cord and is partitioned into the spinothalamic tract of medulla, the spinothalamic tract of pons and the spinothalamic tract of midbrain. Some authors include the brain stem continuations of the spinotectal tract and the spinoreticular tract. Semantic and factual conflicts in alternate definitions are discussed in Anthoney-94. |
