Vergleichende Anatomie des Allocortex.

"Allocortex is the collective term for the totality of the non-isocortical structures of the telencephalic cortex. Correspondingly the allocortex is very heterogeneous. Founded upon the results of earlier authors, we have tried to bring the variety of the allocortical types into a fundamental (basic) classification. Five fundamental types of cortex are distinguished: Allocortex bulbi olfactorii, Allocortex primitivus, Periallocortex, Proisocortex, and Isocortex maturus the first three of which are collected in the allocortex of broader sense, the two latter in isocortex of broader sense. In the Allocortex primitivus are included the Palaeocortex with Regio retrobulbaris, Regio praepiriformis, Regio periamygdalaris, Tuberculum olfactorium, Regio periseptalis and Regio diagonalis, as well as the Archicortex (= Hippocampus) with Hippocampus retro-, supra- [and] praecommissuralis. Within the Palaeocortex the Regio praepiriformis is separated under the term Eupalaeocortex from the rest, due to differences in phylogenetic and ontogenetic development. The rest is joined under the term Semicortex. In the Periallocortex all transitional cortices between Allocortex primitivus and Isocortex are included, as far as they are directly adjacent to the Allocortex primitivus. The transitional cortex adjacent to the praepiriform cortex is called Peripalaeocortex and corresponds to the Regio peripalaeocorticalis claustralis (mesocortical insula), the cortex adjacent to the Hippocampus [is] called Periarchicortex and includes four regions: Regio entorhinalis, praesubicularis, retrosplenialis and cingularis periarchicorticalis, all of which can be subdivided into areas. — From all allocortical regions details about position, size and architectonical characteristics are given. The respective changes in the ascending primate scale, starting from primitive insectivores, are represented" (Stephan, op. cit., p. 217).
