The term alar plate refers to an embryologic structure that develops as a result of the proliferation of ectodermal cells in the mantle layer of that portion of the neural tube that is developing into the spinal cord. Each of the two alar plates is a small posterior thickening of the mantle layer of neural tube that becomes a posterior gray column of the spinal cord ( Carpenter-1983 ).
