vomeronasal nerve
Acronym:
The term vomeronasal nerve refers to the nerve that connects the vomeronasal organ to the accessory olfactory bulb in macrosmatic mammals, such as the rat ( Swanson-1998 ) and the mouse ( Hof-2000 ). It and the terminal nerve form the vomeronasal-terminal nerve complex, which exists in the human fetus, but only up to the eighth month of gestation ( Moran-1995 ). Both are distinct from the olfactory nerve, which is found in both rodents and primates. (See also: accessory olfactory bulb.)
