olfactory epithelium
Acronym:
OLE
The term olfactory epithelium OLE) refers to the parts of the mucous membrane lining the nasal cavity that contain the olfactory receptors (OLR) of the olfactory system (OLS). The more numerous main olfactory receptors (OLRm) are located in the epirthelium that lines the underside of the cribriform plate, the thin bony structure that separates the nasal cavity below from the cranial cavity above ( Price-1990 ). Less numerous are the accessory olfactory receptors (OLRa). Their cell bodies are located in the vomeronasal organ (VNO) where they are embedded in the epithelium of the nasal septum rostral to the OLRm's ( Barral-2009 ). Updated 1 Jul 2024.
