The term pars lateralis of the substantia nigra refers to a part of the pars reticulata of substantia nigra. It is the lateral, 'most fibrous' part ( Poirier-1983 ), which is regarded to be the phylogenetically oldest part of the substantia nigra and the only part found in nonmammalian vertebrates ( Crosby-1962 ).
