The term superficial part of the parapyramidal nucleus refers to one of two components of the parapyramidal nucleus in the ventral medullary reticular formation of the rat. It is located on the ventral surface of the medulla lateral to the pyramidal tract. The other component is the deep part of the parapyramidal nucleus. Functionally the parapyramidal nucleus belongs to the reticular formation (functional) of the the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ).
