phrenic nucleus

The term phrenic nucleus refers to a group of nerve cells located centrally in the anterior gray column of the third to seventh cervical segments of the spinal cord ( Dorland-2004 ). Functionally it belongs to the somatic motoneuron pools of the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ).
