The term hippocampal fissure refers to a deep cleft on the medial surface of the temporal lobe of the human ( Carpenter-1983 ) and the macaque ( Paxinos-2009a ). In those species it separates the dentate gyrus from the parasubiculum and presubiculum of the parahippocampal gyrus and from the subiculum of the hippocampal formation. In the rat ( Swanson-2004 ) and mouse ( Hof-2000 ) it separates the dentate gyrus from the CA1 field of the hippocampal formation.
