metencephalon

The term metencephalon refers to the combination of the pons and cerebellum as defined by dissection and development from the embryonic Mesencephalon ( Carpenter-1983; Schiebler-1999 ). Before the twentieth century the combination was called 'hindbrain' and 'metencephalon' was considered a synonym of pons ( Swanson-2015 ).
