parapyramidal nucleus

The term parapyramidal nucleus refers to a small group of cells located lateral to the pyramid of the medulla in the rat ( Swanson-1998 ) and the mouse ( Paxinos-2001 ). Some authors show it as a narrow band of cells immediately adjacent to the pyramid and composed of two parts: the deep part of the parapyramidal nucleus and the superficial part of the parapyramidal nucleus ( Swanson-2004 ). Others show it as an oval group of cells between the pyramidal tract and the lateral paragigantocellular nucleus ( Paxinos-2012; Franklin-2008; Hof-2000 ).
     Functionally it belongs to the reticular formation (functional) of the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ).
