hippocampal region
Acronym:
The term hippocampal region refers to one of two subdivisions of the hippocampal formation in the Functional CNS Model - Rat ( Swanson-2004 ). It is a part of cerebral cortex defined on the basis of internal structure and function. Located on the ventromedial surface of the hemisphere in the rat, it is composed of the dentate gyrus and the CA fields.
      The hippocampal region of the rat contains the same histologic structures as the functionally defined hippocampal complex except that it omits the subiculum. In the rat, the subiculum is classified as part of the rodent retrohippocampal region ( Swanson-2004 ). Updated 4 Jun 2024.
