posterior parahippocampal gyrus (PHGp)
The term posterior parahippocampal gyrus (PHGp) refers to the more caudal of two parts of the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) defined by dissection of the limbic lobe in the human ( Gray-1918b ) and the macaque ( Martin-2000 ). The other part is the anterior parahippocampal gyrus.
The PHGp is bounded medially by the presubiculum of the hippocampal complex and laterally by the fusiform gyrus ( Crosby-1962 ). Histologically, Brodmann-1909 classed it as perirhinal cortex 35; ( Economo-1927 ) as area TH and area TF, which originally included an internal area THa. The PHGp has no topological equivalent in the smooth cortex of the rodent and no histological equivalent to the neocortical PHGp between presubiculum and more lateral temporal area TEa. All areas between it and the presubiculum in the rat are located in the entorhinal cortex and perirhinal cortex ( Swanson-1994
